Disadvantages Of Constant Voltage Transformer

The Constant Voltage Transformer(CVT) is not all about advantages. It also has disadvantages that drive up costs. For example, if you use a large constant-voltage transformer to extend the low-frequency response, the cost of each constant-voltage transformer may increase from $70 to $200. Another disadvantage is that the constant-voltage transformer reduces the frequency response and increases distortion at the amplifier and speaker ends.

In 1967, Crown International introduced the DC-300 to solve part of the problem. This was the industry's first high-power, low-distortion solid-state amplifier that could drive a 70V line directly, but it did not have a constant-voltage transformer. The Macro-Tech 2400, introduced in June 1987, could drive a 100V line directly. Moreover, Com-Tech and CTs amplifiers also have this capability. Therefore, today, the only thing left that needs a constant-voltage transformer is the speaker to step down the voltage.
