Air Vs. Resin Insulation In Dry Type Transformer Windings: How Protection Works

Publish Time: Author: Site Editor Visit: 3

In a dry type transformer, air and resin serve distinct physical mechanisms to protect electrical windings. Air operates as a natural cooling medium and primary dielectric gap within open-ventilated designs, conducting heat away through convection. Conversely, resin acts as a solid encapsulation barrier that isolates conductors from moisture, dust, and mechanical stress while suppressing partial discharge.

Primary Differences in Winding Protection Media

Air Insulation Mechanics

Air provides immediate dielectric clearance between phase conductors and ground surfaces. In an indoor dry type transformer with open-ventilated construction, surrounding air circulates freely across copper or aluminum coils. This flow prevents thermal buildup during continuous operation, though dielectric strength remains dependent on ambient pressure, humidity, and atmospheric purity levels.

Resin Isolation Performance

Resin seals internal conductors within a dense solid matrix. An epoxy resin dry type transformer utilizes vacuum pressure impregnation or direct casting to eliminate air pockets around the coils. This structural enclosure protects the internal assembly against corrosive atmospheric agents, heavy moisture ingress, and thermal shock during rapid load spikes.

Functional Differences Between Air and Resin

  1. Dielectric Clearance: Air relies on physical spatial distance to prevent arcing, requiring larger enclosure footprints for higher voltage levels.

  2. Environmental Resistance: Solid resin completely seals copper conductors, rendering the unit immune to industrial dust, chemical vapors, and high humidity.

  3. Heat Dissipation: Air relies on direct convective circulation across exposed coil surfaces, whereas resin transfers heat through solid thermal conduction outward to cooling fins.

  4. Partial Discharge Control: Solid casting prevents micro-void formation near internal conductor turns, minimizing partial discharge risks under high electrical stress.

Selection Requirements for High Voltage Installations

Selecting appropriate protection depends on operating environments, system voltage, and maintenance access. A high voltage dry type transformer often integrates cast resin on primary windings to manage extreme voltage stress, while using air circulation to cool secondary low-voltage assemblies.

Primary operational factors for facility installations include:

  1. Atmospheric Exposure: Clean, temperature-controlled sub-stations perform reliably with air-cooled designs, while aggressive chemical or outdoor environments necessitate full resin encapsulation.

  2. Mechanical Load Resistance: Solid resin provides superior short-circuit strength, locking winding turns firmly in place against magnetic repulsive forces.

  3. Maintenance Requirements: Air-ventilated units demand periodic surface cleaning to maintain insulation resistance, whereas sealed resin assemblies need minimal routine physical maintenance.
